The Transport Workers Union – Kenya (TAWU) held a strategic meeting with road transport shop stewards from Nairobi and Nakuru at the COTU-K Headquarters to deliberate on the urgent issues affecting drivers in the road transport sector. The session brought together union leaders, stewards, and sector representatives to discuss the direct connection between poor labour conditions and the increasing number of road accidents across the country.
During the meeting, participants highlighted several key concerns, including excessive working hours, lack of formal employment contracts, inadequate rest periods, and unfair wages—factors that significantly contribute to driver fatigue and unsafe driving practices. The stewards reaffirmed that improving working conditions is central to reducing accidents and promoting safety for both workers and the public.
As the country heads into the festive season, a period traditionally associated with increased travel and heightened road risks, TAWU emphasized the need for collective action. The Union announced its commitment to work closely with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Ministry of Labour to protect drivers through the enforcement of:
Formal written contracts
Regulated working hours
Guaranteed rest periods
Fair and timely wages
TAWU believes that strengthening labour standards is essential not only for the welfare of drivers but also for the broader national agenda on road safety. The Union will continue to engage all stakeholders—including employers, SACCOs, government agencies, and worker representatives—to ensure safer roads, decent work, and improved service delivery in the transport sector.
